Method and sources of error

  1. The timer starts when you press your first key in the typing box and stops at the time limit, or earlier if you finish the whole text. Time is measured with the browser's performance.now(), to a fraction of a millisecond.
  2. Each character you type is compared with the character at the same position in the text. A missed or extra character moves all the following characters out of position, so please correct it with the Backspace key.
  3. Speed in words per minute (WPM) = correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. Spaces count as characters. Key depressions per hour = correct characters ÷ hours. Accuracy = correct characters ÷ characters typed.
  4. Keyboard and system delays are usually a few tens of milliseconds, which affects a test of one minute or longer by less than 0.1%. Your familiarity with the words, and the on-screen keyboard of a phone, affect the result much more. Other websites may count differently, so their results are not directly comparable.
  5. Text: the passages are original to this website. The common words are the first 1,000 words of the New General Service List (NGSL), excluding 20 words related to politics, violence or religion, and are shown in random order.
