- The traditional relation follows from the two earthly branches: pairs whose branch numbers add up to 1 more than a multiple of 12 are six harmonies, animals 4 places apart form a triad, and animals 6 places apart clash.
- Each relation has a fixed score, shown in the compatibility rules. The same two animals always give the same result.
